Learners who completed the Certificate in Architectural Hardware before 2022 will be required to complete Bridging Course 3: Door Systems in order to study the Diploma in Door Systems.

This bridging course can be completed in advance of, or during the same academic year, as the Stage 3 Door Systems programme.

The GAI Challenge Exams are designed to help those who wish to return to their GAI studies after a break.

Challenge Exams are suitable for:
Certificate in Architectural Hardware candidates who have taken a break of three years or more between stages; OR Diploma candidates who have taken a culminative break in their GAI studies of more than three years; OR successful Certificate candidates who wish to move on to Diploma studies after a culminative break in their GAI studies of more than three years.

The 90-minute online invigilated test covers all areas of the previously completed and passed studies.

Challenge Exam 1 is for those who have passed Stage or Level 1 previously and not progressed to Stage or Level 2.

The Foundation in Hardware is an online introduction to door hardware aimed at those who don’t live and breathe architectural ironmongery as their day to day job.

The course comprises twelve sections with ’test yourself’ questions at the end of each.

It is intended to provide an insight into many of the aspects of architectural hardware, including hinges, closers, locks and furniture.

There are also sections dealing with fire doors, escape hardware and a brief insight into the legislation surrounding all of these products. It is taken entirely online and includes an end of module exam.

Success in this exam provides a Certificate of Competence in ‘The Foundation in Hardware’. Candidates can take as much or little time as they wish to complete the 12 sections, and, then they may take the exam until they achieve the pass rate of 80%+.

Students can fit studying for the GAI Foundation Module around their work easily with bite size modules of learning.

The Certificate in Architectural Hardware, provides a good footing into ironmongery, covering various subjects. Learners who complete the Certificate in Architectural Hardware find that they are fully competent in making informed decisions when working with particular products and materials, as well as having an understanding of best practices and industry standards.

Gain a thorough understanding of the what, how and when of ironmongery with this two year, self-led, online course (Stage 1 and 2).

In the Certificate in Architectural Hardware Stage 1 you will explore 14 modules arranged into 5 learning blocks.

Learners are free to choose the order they complete these modules, although they are best followed in sequence.

Study time:
On average learners are expected to dedicate 70 hours of study time over a one year period, depending on each individual learner. Learners who sign up for The Certificate in Architectural Hardware are expected to complete the full course over a two year period, or some learners may choose to “Fast Track” and complete both Stages 1 and 2 in a one year period.

Assessment:
Each learner will answer a set of compulsory coursework questions at the end of each block, the total of which will form 30% of the overall mark Resit the coursework questions as many times as you like until the coursework deadline and only the final attempt will be recorded as your achievement Sit a final exam which will make up 70% of your overall mark. The GAI Diploma in Door Systems educates on all aspects of the architectural ironmongery industry with emphasis on the door type: steel, timber, composite or uPVC.

This three-stage course leads to qualification as a Diploma holder in Door Systems (DipDS).

Building on this qualification, a CPD programme supports learners working towards Registered Door Systems (RegAi - DS) status.

After completing the online course and digesting the associated reading, individuals will feel confident guiding buying decisions, confirming usage requirements to avoid returns and effectively sell related products to increase revenue opportunities.

The GAI Diploma in Scheduling builds competence and a broader working knowledge of all aspects of the architectural ironmongery industry. Building on the product knowledge and application gained in the Certificate in Architectural Hardware, this learning programme further develops application, specifying and scheduling skills. The GAI Diploma in Scheduling (DipGAI) will give you the confidence and competence to discuss the ironmongery requirements for any project, including the ability to write accurate hardware specifications, whether you’re talking to an architect, builder, joinery, contractor, building manager or a homeowner.

Coursework
Stage 3 online module assessment is compulsory and forms part of your product knowledge for scheduling. The questions in module assessment may be attempted as many times as you wish, it is only the marks achieved in your last attempt that will be recorded on 30th April 2025.

Examination
As part of your final Scheduling exam you will be required to prepare a Master Key Control Chart. You must achieve a 50% pass in this part in order to pass your scheduling exam. To assist you we have two master key exercises for you to complete, this will be marked and returned to you as a guide towards your final exam.
