David Martin 1944-2024

It is with great sadness that the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) has learned of the death of our former education consultant David Martin.

David – Dave to everyone who knew him – enjoyed a long and successful career in architectural ironmongery with Allgood Ltd for more than 35 years. He was actively involved with the Guild throughout his career, and was awarded the GAI Gold Medal in 1970. He retired from his role as National Sales Director in 2003, and became Education Consultant to the GAI in 2005.

In this part time role Dave managed and developed the education programme with huge energy and enthusiasm. During his tenure, the Diploma course was extensively revised, with learning materials updated and new ways of learning introduced.

Dave will be fondly remembered by former students for the way in which he ran the scheduling courses, part of the final stage in the GAI Diploma in Scheduling. His unique style was infectious, humorous and above all fun, helping him to impart to the next generation all that he had learned through his own career.

By the time Dave stood down from the role of Education Consultant in 2010, the Guild’s education programme had been extensively modernised, and the platform set for its subsequent success.

Our condolences go to Dave’s family including son Paul, who continues his father’s legacy in both architectural ironmongery and the Guild, as a current member of the Executive Committee.
