The Certificate in Standards and Regulations is a training programme with annually assessed certification to educate on all aspects of the standards relevant to the architectural ironmongery industry.

This Stage 3 certificate course builds and demonstrates the professional competence in standards required for product testing, checking certification, and knowing what can – and should – be specified, and why.

The Certificate in Standards and Regulations course includes learning across the following three stages.

Stage One

  • Introduction to standards and regulations
  • The legal status of standards
  • How to select the appropriate standard
  • Standards compliance as a protection
  • Building regulations and standards
  • Sourcing

Stage Two

  • Standards and regulations of the ironmonger
  • Guides to Standards – best practice guides
  • Code of Practice for Hardware for fire and escape doors

Stage Three

  • Comparison between BS/EN and American standards
  • Specification and supply:
  • Consequences of ignoring defined risks
  • UK Building Safety Act
  • UK Fire Safety Act
  • Product security and Telecommunications Act
  • UKCA marking, CE marking and the CPR
This one-year course is assessed through compulsory coursework questions at the end of each learning stage, and a final examination.

On completion, a certificate confirming Certificated Standards and Regulations Advisor status will be issued, and learners may use the post nominal letters CertSRA.

Due to frequent changes in standards and regulation, the candidate must renew their CertSRA status every year through the Guild’s CPD programme and an annual online exam.

Who is it for?

This Stage 3 certificate course is ideal for anyone specifying architectural ironmongery or working with architectural ironmongery specifications, who wants to build and demonstrate the technical expertise and understanding to know what can and should be specified, why, and the consequences of getting it wrong.

It is also ideal for anyone involved in the supply chain with responsibility for testing products in their business or importing products with responsibility for checking certification.

It can be taken by anyone who has completed either the Certificate in Architectural Hardware Stages (CiAH) or any other GAI Stage 3 Diploma qualification (i.e. DipGAI or DipDS). Please note: Learners who completed the Certificate in Architectural Hardware or GAI Diploma before Summer 2021 must complete a bridging course which can be taken in advance of, or concurrently with, the new diploma course. Due to the amount of time required for concurrent study, learners selecting this option may choose to take their final examination with the traditional June exam day or one of the retake dates in September or October.

“Being accredited to CertSRA has provided me with a broader view of product standards and regulations which also aligns with Allgood Ltd philosophy of our products being tested to the highest standards.
CertSRA is not only useful for UK/EU Standards but also provides a good understanding of ANSI & UL accreditation.

Having CertSRA supports my product and technical roles nicely and perhaps I feel provides more credibility in supporting our project sales teams both for UK and International products”.

Robert Noon, Technical and Product Coordinator – Allgood Ltd.
